After helping the troupe by finishing off Hario and saving Kakunojou from Saiga’s sniper rifle, and Soutetsu’s mention of Sakamoto, he seems to have become their de facto bodyguard, starting with the performance in episode 4 where Akizuki killed Saiga on stage.

In episode 5 he had to fight against new enemies sent by Nakaiya and fails to defeat them, but in episode 6 he very easily slices them off, although Kanna has the last shot at one of them.

Akizuki rushes to the Satsuma residence where Katsu and Saigo are meeting in episode 8 as Nakaiya is there with the Head. However he is engaged in a battle with Kanna for the most part and gets shot in the arm. When he manages to shake Kanna off, though, it's too late as Soutetsu has escaped with the Head.
Akizuki eventually catches up with him as he gets ready to leave Yokohama by boat, but Soutetsu sends out spirit protectors of the Head, and Akizuki's mission is once again left unfulfilled as Soutetsu safely rows off.

Akizuki meets up with Okita Souji in Edo, where he saves Okita from a tight spot and catches up with him. Akizuki also asks if Okita heard anything about the Head while in the Shinsengumi, and he replies in the negative. The next day, the Battle of Ueno has started and Akizuki rushes to Okita's house to find that he has left to join in the fighting. Akizuki then desparately goes after Okita...

Akizuki manages to stop Okita by unwillingly knocking him out with the hilt of his sword. He later entertains Okita's request to have one last spar with him (with wooden swords of course, not real ones) after which Okita starts coughing blood out again. Okita is attacked by Imperial Army soldiers while Akizuki is out getting the doctor, but he comes back in time to knock them out. After which, Akizuki hears out Okita's final request - to tell Toshi-san (that is, Hijikata Toshizou, a Shinsengumi captain) that he's going first, and then Okita dies in his arms.
Oryou visits the house Okita was in the next day but Akizuki has already left...
