AKIZUKI Youjirou 秋月耀次郎

The main character of the show. 17 years old. A (very) silent and stoic samurai.
Voiced by NAMIKAWA Daisuke.
His lifetime job as the Eternal Assassin (Eien no Shikaku) is to ultimately dispose of the Conqueror’s Head by cutting it with his sword, the Sword of Moon Tears. When he is attacking it his eyes glow blue. He seemed to have cut the Head in episode 1, but he had not cut its spirit yet, so his mission is still incomplete. Akizuki is one in a (long?) line of such Assassins and has been prepared for this role since he arrived at the age of 3 in his hometown, Koma, by Shouten-sama and Shinza.
Previously, however, he was also the bodyguard of Sakamoto Ryouma after first trying to assassinate him because he felt the aura of the Head around Sakamoto. This is similar to Sakamoto’s first encounter with Katsu Kaishuu.
Unfortunately, as per history, Sakamoto was assassinated just two months later, and Akizuki arrived at the scene too late. He was detained as a suspect but was released after a while, where he just disappeared without even saying anything to Sakamoto's wife Oryou.
Three months later, the anime has started and Akizuki still cannot forgive himself for allowing such a thing to happen.
He greatly respects Sakamoto and his ideals: one of the show’s taglines is “The very man who could not protect Ryouma, will continue to inherit his ideals.” (龍馬を守れなかったその男は、龍馬の意志を継ぐ)
Since then, he has been looking for the Head, leading him to Yokohama, where he meets the Troupe after saving Kobako and Benimaru from a sticky situation.
Coincidentially he got to know Okita Souji, ex-unit captain of the Shinsengumi, when he had traveled outside of Koma for training at a different dojo. Since then it is unknown how many times they have met before episode 10, but Akizuki is very respectful of him.
