KAWAI Tsuginosuke 河井継之助

One of the most high-ranking samurai of the Nagaoka domain, Kawai is a real historical figure. His brief depiction in the anime is (so far) similar to his figure in real life, which you can read about here..

Under the capacity of karou (家老, a senior retainer), Kawai administered the domain of Nagaoka, in the northern province of Echigo. He was in the process of trying to reform the local administration as Nagaoka was choking on debt, but then war broke out in 1868, between the old Shogunate's supporters and the Imperial army in what was the beginning of the Boshin War.
Kawai did not want to get involved in it, hoping instead for Nagaoka to maintain military independence. He therefore stocked up on arms, which included buying two Gatling guns from Nakaiya's secret auction in episode 1. Hario is temporarily assigned to him as a bodyguard to ensure the safe passage of the guns. (Note that in real life, he famously bought two Gatling guns in Yokohama around the same time as the anime, but from the Schnell brothers.)
Whether he is ultimately successful or not remains to be seen...
