YUYAMA Kakunojou 遊山赫之丈
(Affiliation: ? – Troupe; Yuyama household)
First appearance: Ep 1
The resolute leader of the troupe (zachou). Lead kabuki actor. Really a girl, ok?
Voiced by SATOU Rina.
Kakunojou was the daughter of a rich merchant from western Japan. She used to live a comfortable life until 10 years ago (1858), when as a child, her parents were killed by Hario and her house was burned down right before her eyes. This tragedy gave her a strong will and burning desire for vengeance, be it through kabuki performances or otherwise. For the sake of revenge, she is willing to put herself in even the most dangerous of situations.
Since only men could act in kabuki plays, Kakunojou has to pretend to be a man in order to act. Hence, she wears men’s clothing and takes on a male name (as evidenced by that particular “-jou” suffix). However, she can conveniently perform as an oyama (女形) – a male kabuki actor who cross-dresses and takes on female roles. She seems to be quite popular with both male and female audiences.
Despite her motives of revenge, she nevertheless appears to be a kind person genuinely concerned about the troupe. She is well-mannered, but that does not stop her from speaking in a clear, ringing tone when advertising for the troupe or during her kabuki plays. For now, she trusts Akizuki.
