Kotoha 琴波

The top oiran (a high-class courtesan) at Sekkakurou.

Kotoha is a tayuu (太夫), the highest level of oiran. She is the most influential and famous at the Sekkakurou, the pleasure house within the yuukaku or pleasure quarters of Yokohama, and has many admirers who are unafraid to yell out "Kotoha-dayuu! Nippon ichi!" (Kotoha Tayuu, #1 in Japan!) during processions.
Her large clientele includes VIPs such as Parkes and Katsu, and as such is in a position to pick up hints regarding the character of these big players, as well as their possible actions. At the same time, she is a staunch supporter of the Yuyama troupe, and later collaborates with Soutetsu to have the troupe provide entertainment for a night at the Sekkakurou.
As the lead oiran of the Sekkakurou, Kotoha is a strong-willed and determined lady when it comes to household affairs or the reputation of the house; but with her customers she is a gentle yet witty companion, often up to par with them in holding a good conversation. Of course, she also accompanies them in singing dodoitsu if they please.
Her speech is characterised by a lyrical intonation and the copula "de arinsu" (used in place of "desu", "de arimasu", etc.).
