Nakaiya cont.

Yokohama arc (eps 1-8)

After unsuccessful attempts to quash the Troupe, he makes a deal with Kanna Sakyounosuke, whose background he is familiar with. Very strangely, he meets up with the troupe's playwright, Ibaragi Soutetsu in episode 7...

Not long after Nakaiya and Kanna infiltrate the house in which Katsu Kaishuu and Saigou Takamori are about to close a deal to bloodlessly surrender Edo Castle and not wage war there.

Nakaiya uses the Head to make Katsu and Saigou start fighting each other; meanwhile Soutetsu is in the vicinity with a special vessel for the Head, and the Troupe, as well as Akizuki, are nearby too, looking to kill him/seal the Head...

At the end of episode 8, Nakaiya has the Head taken away from him by Soutetsu, who fatally wounds Hata Meifuu before escaping with it. Meanwhile, the Troupe has cornered Nakaiya, and Zagashira and Ebisu deal a fatal blow to him. Kakunojou is about to finish him off with a final stab but Kanna shoots her sword out of her hand.

Edo arc (eps 11-13)

As the Troupe moves to Edo they figure out that Nakaiya is alive because of Soutetsu's script.
Soutetsu's complete script strangely indicates for the real Nakaiya to play his own role in the play.

Indeed, he is alive and is on board Enomoto Takeaki's ship, presumably in order to help him settle some outstanding payments. Kanna is still escorting him, and Soutetsu, also on the ship, is absolutely unsurprised that Nakaiya is alive.

He is pretty much powerless to go after the Troupe without the Head in his possession, and tries to take it back from Soutetsu in episode 13, but...

End of arc (highlight to view spoilers)
He managed to get the Head off Soutetsu - despite Kanna's betrayal, which he somehow knew was coming, but then as per Soutetsu' script, halfway through the play the Troupe and Akizuki barge in running towards them. Nakaiya tries to escape in his own rowboat, but loses his hold on the Head, as cannons fired into the water by Parkes' secret soldiers disrupt matters.

Ebisu manages to tie down Nakaiya with his chains, but then both of them are hit directly by one of the shells and most probably have died for good - although Nakaiya claims that he will not die until he has seen hell on earth or something to that extent a short while ago.
